STRATEGIES FROM THE DAILY FIVE

Strategies for Decoding Unfamiliar Words:

Cross-Check - (Ask your students to show you the physical motions for this strategy. ) Ask yourself the beginning sound, the ending sound, and what makes sense.

Flip the Sound - Flip the vowel sound from long to short or from short to long if the word you are reading does not make sense. For example: “I hope you come to my house.” If your student reads: “I hop you come to my house.”, ask him/ to “flip” the vowel sound to a “long o” sound to see if the word makes sense.

Stretch the Sound - When a word begins with two consonants instead of one, students must put the two sounds together and “stretch” them to make the correct beginning sound. For example: drrrrrrrr um - drum
