Friday, February 27th

WOW!  WHAT A WEEK!

We have been so busy!  Yesterday was the “Grand Opening” of the Elm Creek Mini-Market, and business was booming!

We have learned so much about recognizing coins, counting money, and we are even beginning to make change!  Each student has an Elm Creek Shopping Book to keep up with purchases and show the amount of money he/she spends each visit.

AND.....

SINK OR FLOAT?

"Science Friday" was great fun, and we learned so much about what happens when you add something to water-like salt!  We created "oceans" to see how many pennies in our "penny boats" would float in fresh water and salt water.  We discovered that we should all head to the beach (an ocean) to float!  A HUGE thanks to David and Noah's moms for their help in guiding these observations!

And what great work your firsties are doing in their science notebooks documenting their discoveries and observations!

We are also working on addition and subtraction facts with totals to 18 as well as using
grouping as a strategy to help us solve problems. Thank you for helping your firstie with Math Homework on a regular basis.

We have finished reading the Frog and Toad stories!  Next week we will begin on puppets, puppet stages, and writing scripts.  I should have a better idea next week about the date for our Puppet Play.  I will let you know how we progress!

And, please continue to practice writing and reading the Word Work lists as well as any other word lists that come your way.  As your firstie becomes a more sophisticated reader and writer, he/she needs to move toward becoming an independent speller as well. Remember to send February Reading Calendars back on Monday.

Enjoy the weekend with your firsties!
