Friday, October 31st

What a wonderful gathering we had today at our Fall Party!  We enjoyed "real food" in the Creature Cafe!  We played games, sorted, counted (and ate:) candy, and enjoyed a great time together.

Here's a peek into our fun:

Thanks so much to Zachary's mom (Mrs. Tanya), Carson's mom (Mrs. Mary), Carson's mom (Mrs. Kris), and Noah's mom (Mrs. Emily) for their help with all of the fun!

So….the Creature CafĂ© is “closed for the season”, and we will continue our learning by celebrating…..

FAMILIES, FOOD, AND TRADITIONS!

No two families are alike, and we will have so much fun during the next few weeks celebrating our families through foods and traditions!  As we prepare for the Thanksgiving season, we will explore harvest traditions of different cultures to add meaning to the traditions shared by families in our class.

We will be completing surveys about families and the foods and tradtions they share while exoloring other kinds of families as well:  Math Fact Families, Word Families, Animal Families and more. We will create models of favorite family meals and share recipes.  We will talk about how foods we enjoy are cultivated and harvested, and we will even create a plan for a Three Sisters Garden to be planted in the spring. And, we will share stories of the past and present that bring meaning and excitement to the Harvest Season.

I would like to thank you in advance for the time you will spend with your first grader having rich conversations about family traditions and celebrations.  There will be several Home Learning Experiences during the next few weeks that will focus on these ideas and concepts.

These first graders are doing amazing things!

Sunday, October 26th

So, the Creature CafĂ© is Open!  And we have had a great week!

The Creature Cafe offers "food", games, fun and LOTS of learning!  There are opportunities for role-playing, creative writing, practicing math skills, poetry, and much more.

Daily Five

Next week, we will work on identifying the main idea and supporting details of reading selections.  And, BATS will be our context!   We will read non-fiction selections and talk about the important facts presented.  (We will also enjoy some fiction books that use bats as wonderful characters!)  We are also writing stories using descriptive words to describe the Halloween characters in our writing.

AND….

We are building equations!!!! We are looking at number partners, using models and drawings to find the totals.

We are also counting nickels and pennies!  Ask your first grader if he/she is finding the total by “counting all” or “counting on”?

PICTURES, PUMPKINS, AND PICNIC (IN THAT ORDER!)

If you haven’t sent your picture order or submitted it on-line, do so by Monday. If you placed your order on-line, please send  a copy of receipt to school on Monday.

We will have school pictures made on Monday, October 27th  at 10:20, followed by pumpkin carvings. (Feel free to send a shirt to put over “picture clothes” for pumpkin carving.)  Weather permitting, we will have our picnic lunch at 11:30. (If it is rainy, we will enjoy our lunch in the classroom.) Please send a towel for the picnic.  Join us if you can!  Just check in at the office.
