Friday, December 12th

BLUE NOTES

Friday, December 12th

It has been a VERY busy week in Mrs. Blue’s 1st Grade Classroom!  And, today (Friday) was no exception!  An elf (named Blue) arrived!

And we made our way through our last country, South Africa, before arriving at the North Pole! (Look for your child’s travel journal to come home next Friday!)

Since we have an elf in our classroom, we aren't really sure what surprises are in store for next week J, but we will be completing our greeting cards (The cards are beautiful!), Reading and Writing in Daily Five and enjoying wonderful stories of the holiday season.  We are also completing our unit on addition and subtraction number partners (and math stories) with totals up to 10. You can support this work by “telling” number stories in real-life situations. To help your child distinguish between addition and subtraction problems, think about these questions:

Addition:  How many in all?  How many altogether? What is the total?

Subtraction:  How many are left?  How many are NOT in a group?

When looking at a Math Mountain, the total is on the TOP.  When looking at math stories and problems, using the math mountain helps students determine the number partner that is missing.

Next week, we will be busy completing our greeting cards and using some holiday themes for measurement, symmetry, alphabetical order, stories with a beginning, middle, and end, and more. We will make cookie houses and share some wonderful stories together.

On Tuesday (Dec 22nd), first grade students are invited to wear pajamas, robes, slippers, AND to bring a stuffed animal to school! (And, your first grader should bring one or two favorite books from home.) They will be snuggling up with good books and celebrating the holiday season with good friends. REMEMBER: Tennis shoes are still required for PhyEd AND shoes/boots are necessary as the weather requires.

Enjoy a wonderful weekend with family and friends!
