A VERY SPECIAL VISIT FROM THE MAPLE GROVE FIRE DEPARTMENT!

Chad and Sarah from the Maple Grove Fire Department did an AMAZING job with our firsties this week teaching them about fire safety and guiding them as they thought about their own Fire Safety Plans at home.

The Fire Safety Homework is to LEARN the physical address and to practice the Fire Safety Plan.

Malmborg’s Field Trip! May 19th! We will return to school at 12:30 and will have a Class Picnic! Please join us if you can!

STRATEGIES FROM THE DAILY FIVE

Strategies for Decoding Unfamiliar Words:

Cross-Check - (Ask your students to show you the physical motions for this strategy. ) Ask yourself the beginning sound, the ending sound, and what makes sense.

Flip the Sound - Flip the vowel sound from long to short or from short to long if the word you are reading does not make sense. For example: “I hope you come to my house.” If your student reads: “I hop you come to my house.”, ask him/ to “flip” the vowel sound to a “long o” sound to see if the word makes sense.

Stretch the Sound - When a word begins with two consonants instead of one, students must put the two sounds together and “stretch” them to make the correct beginning sound. For example: drrrrrrrr um - drum
