FEBRUARY IS "I LOVE TO READ" MONTH!

And, it started for Mrs. Blue's class with a visit from the Wizard of Oz and Dorothy! They delivered a wonderful gift to our room - The Wizard of Oz book! We are enjoying reading it together.

And, that's not all, the Media Center has turned into well...See for yourself!

And, the map is almost completed! Finishing touches tomorrow!

STRATEGIES FROM THE DAILY FIVE

Strategies for Decoding Unfamiliar Words:

Cross-Check - (Ask your students to show you the physical motions for this strategy. ) Ask yourself the beginning sound, the ending sound, and what makes sense.

Flip the Sound - Flip the vowel sound from long to short or from short to long if the word you are reading does not make sense. For example: “I hope you come to my house.” If your student reads: “I hop you come to my house.”, ask him/ to “flip” the vowel sound to a “long o” sound to see if the word makes sense.

Stretch the Sound - When a word begins with two consonants instead of one, students must put the two sounds together and “stretch” them to make the correct beginning sound. For example: drrrrrrrr um - drum
